Three-bean chili

Three-bean chili

This was gross.  Bland, icky, and what a waste of buying Amino.

This reportedly a favorite is Josh's when served with Fritos, cheese, and sour cream.  That explains a few things.  I tried it with that stuff since we had a small bag of Fritos laying around, and ew.  Icky.  I've got Mexican in-laws who've shared an authentic chili recipe, and it's very different.  It's delicious.  The Duggar chili is to real chili what Taco Bell tacos are to real Mexican tacos, only Taco Bell is good for what it is.  Duggar chili is just nasty.

The amino can be used in place of soy sauce, so imagine chili with soy sauce and lots of oregano.  It is as cringeworthy as it sounds!  I regret making a double batch.  From now on, only small batches of things so I don't waste too much money.

I give this a 1/10.

  1. I am confused, do you/did you just toss the dried beans into the pot and let it go?

I make a chili recipe that's similar (and also not authentic), but I soak the beans overnight and cook them first. And I use two cans of diced tomatoes and a pound of hamburger, browned, and it doesn't look a thing like your picture, to be honest.

But then mine doesn't call for the 4 cups of water. I cook the beans in just enough water to keep them covered, it's probably less than a cup by the time I'm done.

This makes no sense to me.

  2. Yes, dry beans. If you simmer, you can cook beans right from being completely dry. I make split pea soup and real chili a lot, and always start from dry. It doesn't take more than a negligible amount of extra time.

For my chili, I add enough water to cover, and add more as needed. The Duggar recipe called for a lot more water than it should have. My crock pot is on the fritz, so I simmered all day. Same effect. It made the beans too mushy for my taste. I stupidly made a double batch thinking this recipe can't be that bad. It was.

The recipe I was given from the in-laws has two cans of diced tomatoes, a pound of hamburger OR turkey, which tastes better than burger, and a lot less water, and no oregano, and no amino!

  3. OK, then the recipe from your in-laws is a lot closer to mine. Mine originally started with canned beans, but I quick soak and pre-boil dried now, and then add in just enough of the cooking water to approximate the cans. And then two cans of diced tomatoes, no oregano and no amino, which I would replace with soy sauce if it was called for at all.
